Catawba County, located in the western part of North Carolina, was established in 1842 from Lincoln County. The county is named after the native American Catawba tribe that once inhabited the region. The Catawba tribe was one of the Southeastern Siouan-speaking tribes and played an essential role in the county's history.

The history of Catawba County can be traced back to the mid-1700s with the arrival of European settlers. These settlers largely came from the north, particularly from Pennsylvania and Maryland, who were mainly of Scotch-Irish, English, and German descent. As communities formed in the region, the settlers established agriculture as the backbone of the county's economy, cultivating crops like corn, wheat, and cotton.

Railroads reached the county in the 19th century, facilitating the growth of the textile and furniture industries, for which the region is still well-known today. Hickory, the largest and most populous city in Catawba County, was founded in the mid-1800s at the junction of two railroad lines, and played a significant role in the county's economic growth as a major transportation hub.

Fun fact: Catawba County is known for its impressive collection of historic sites and museums, including the Hickory Museum of Art residing within the Arts & Science Center, which holds a prominent collection of American art, particularly North Carolina pottery.
