Chowan County, located in the northeastern region of North Carolina, was established in 1670 as a part of Albemarle County, which was the first county in the state. Chowan County was officially formed in 1739, and it was named after the Chowan River, itself named after the Chowanoke, a Native American tribe that once inhabited the area.

The county seat, Edenton, was founded in 1712 and was the colonial capital of North Carolina from 1722 until 1743 when the capital was moved to New Bern. The town of Edenton played a significant role in American Revolutionary history, and it was the site of the famous Edenton Tea Party in 1774, where 51 women gathered to protest the British Tea Act. This marked the first organized women's political demonstration in U.S. history.

A fun fact about Chowan County is that it's home to the Cupola House, a national historic landmark built in 1758. The Cupola House is one of the finest examples of Jacobean architecture in the southern colonies and is now a museum showcasing the history and culture of colonial-era Chowan County.
