.Columbus County, located in the southeastern region of North Carolina, was established on December 15, 1808. The county was named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the famous explorer who is credited with discovering America. The county seat, Whiteville, was named after James B. White, a North Carolina state legislator.
Columbus County has a rich historical background, with its origins dating back to the Native American settlements of the Waccamaw Sioux and the Cape Fear Indians. European settlers arrived in the region during the early 18th century, mainly from the British Isles.
The area was primarily an agricultural community during the antebellum period, with many large plantations producing crops such as tobacco, cotton, and rice. Columbus County played a role in the American Civil War, as the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad passed through the county, transporting supplies and men to Confederate forces.
In the later years, the county's economy diversified, incorporating forestry and industry alongside agriculture, such as the Carolina Southern Railroad Company which was crucial for the local economy.
