Dare County is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, within the Outer Banks, which is a chain of barrier islands that stretch along the coast. Founded in 1870, Dare County was named after Virginia Dare, who was the first English child born in the New World on Roanoke Island in 1587. The county's history is steeped in early colonial endeavors and maritime culture.

Before Europeans arrived, Native American tribes, such as the Algonquian-speaking Roanoke and Croatoan tribes, inhabited the region. In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh established the Roanoke Colony as the first English settlement in the Americas, but it mysteriously vanished by 1590, leaving only the infamous word "Croatoan" carved into a tree. The fate of the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke remains one of America's enduring mysteries to this day.

In 1903, Dare County gained notoriety when the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, achieved the first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk. This historic event marked the beginning of modern aviation and is commemorated at the Wright Brothers National Memorial.

As a fun fact, Dare County is home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, standing at 210 feet (64 meters) tall. The lighthouse serves as a crucial navigational aid for sailors, as the waters of Cape Hatteras are known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the many shipwrecks that have occurred there.
