Edgecombe County is located in the great state of North Carolina and was established in 1732 as part of Bath County. It derived its name from Richard Edgcumbe, a member of the British Parliament and former Lord Chancellor. The county was originally formed as Edgecombe Precinct but was designated as a county in 1746. The historic town of Tarboro, founded in 1760, serves as the county seat.

The county played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War, with many notable Revolutionary leaders stemming from Edgecombe County. Among them was General William R. Davie, who later became the "Father of the University of North Carolina."

Edgecombe County has a rich agricultural history, with fertile land perfect for the growth of cash crops such as tobacco and cotton. The county was also known for its textile industry during the 19th and 20th centuries.

For a fun fact about Edgecombe County, it was once home to the world's largest Atlantic white cedar tree, which was located near the town of Conetoe. The tree, unfortunately, fell due to a storm in 1984, but it was estimated to be more than 1,000 years old at the time it fell, making it one of the oldest trees in North Carolina.
