.Gates County is a rural county located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, United States. Established in 1779, the county takes its name from General Horatio Gates, a Revolutionary War hero who led the American forces to victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. The county formation was a result of dividing the areas that were previously parts of Chowan, Perquimans, and Hertford Counties.
