Gates County is a rural county located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, United States. Established in 1779, the county takes its name from General Horatio Gates, a Revolutionary War hero who led the American forces to victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. The county formation was a result of dividing the areas that were previously parts of Chowan, Perquimans, and Hertford Counties.

The economy of Gates County has predominantly been agricultural since its inception. Raising livestock and cultivating crops like corn, soybeans, and cotton have continued to be vital aspects of the local economy over the centuries.
