Granville County, North Carolina, was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe County, which was located in the northeastern part of the state. Named in honor of Lord John Carteret, the 2nd Earl Granville, who was one of the eight original Lords Proprietors of the Province of Carolina. Granville County originally encompassed much of the area that now makes up the northern part of North Carolina, as well as parts of present-day Virginia. In the 1750s and 1760s, the county boundaries were revised multiple times, as new counties, such as Bute and Orange, were carved out of Granville County. The county seat, Oxford, was established in 1761, and has remained the heart of the region ever since.

Granville County has played a significant role in North Carolina's development, especially during the pre-Revolutionary period. The region was a key stop on the Great Wagon Road, which connected the southern colonies with the northern ones. Granville County's rich soil made it an ideal location for tobacco farming, which became one of the primary industries of the county.

The county is also known for its vibrant African American communities, which trace their roots to the area's large population of enslaved Africans who worked on plantations before the Civil War. After the war, many former slaves settled in rural Granville County and established vibrant, self-sufficient communities, some of which still exist today.

A fun fact about Granville County is that it is home to the "Granville Haunt Farm," a popular Halloween attraction, featuring a haunted trail, a corn maze, and zombie paintball. The farm has been entertaining and scaring visitors for more than a decade, making it a must-visit destination for thrill-seekers and Halloween enthusiasts around the region.
