Greene County is located in North Carolina's coastal plains region and was originally formed in 1791 from the eastern part of Dobbs County. It was named in honor of Nathanael Greene, a highly respected major general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Greene played a significant role in driving the British forces out of the Carolinas.

Greene County's history primarily revolves around agriculture, given its fertile land and rural landscape. Early settlers in the region were of English, Welsh, and Scot-Irish descent. The county's economic development was largely driven by the farming of cash crops, such as tobacco and cotton, and the introduction of livestock production.

In the mid-19th century, Greene County was impacted by the construction of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad, which connected as a major transportation hub to other parts of the state. The establishment of this railway system allowed the county to increase its trade, both in terms of goods and services.

As a fun fact, Snow Hill, the county seat, is regarded as a "Town of the Spring Season". This nickname originated from Snow Hill's annual Spring Festival, which is held in May every year. The festival includes a myriad of events like arts, crafts, car shows, and live performances, attracting tourists and locals to come together and celebrate the arrival of spring in Greene County.
