Harnett County is located in the state of North Carolina and was established in 1855. It was formed from parts of Cumberland County and named after Cornelius Harnett, an American statesman, merchant, and revolutionary from Wilmington, North Carolina. Cornelius Harnett was a prominent figure during the American Revolutionary War and served as a delegate to the Continental Congress.

The county seat is Lillington, while its largest city is Dunn. Geographically, Harnett County is bordered by Chatham, Cumberland, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Sampson, and Wake counties, covering a total area of 601 square miles.

During the Civil War, the county experienced significant economic hardship due to occupation by Union troops, who consumed many of the resources available in the region. In 1907, a prominent businessman from the town of Dunn named Leslie T. Boney founded Boney Engineering Company, which later evolved into Boney Architects, a regional cornerstone of architecture, planning, and engineering services.

Today, Harnett County's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and a growing service sector. The two major educational institutions in the county are Campbell University and Central Carolina Community College. Campbell University is a private Baptist university founded in 1887, while Central Carolina Community College is a public institution that offers associate degrees, certificates, diplomas, and enrichment programs.

Fun fact: Harnett County is home to Raven Rock State Park, which features a massive quartzite "Raven Rock" along the Cape Fear River. This impressive 150-foot high rock formation was used for centuries as a landmark for Native Americans and early European settlers. The park offers various activities including hiking, fishing, and picnicking, making it a fantastic destination for both locals and tourists to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of North Carolina.
