Hyde County, located in the great state of North Carolina, holds a rich historical background. Established in 1705, it was named in honor of the Edward Hyde, the first Governor of colonial North Carolina who served from 1710 to 1712. The county is situated in the easternmost part of North Carolina and is part of the Inner Banks region, which comprises a portion of the state's coastal plain.

Initially, the area was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Native American tribes, followed by European colonial settlers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Economic activity in the region was primarily based on farming and the plantation system, with agriculture remaining a dominant force throughout its history. The county gradually developed and expanded. In 1823, it was divided to create Tyrrell County, which lies to the north.

A fun fact about Hyde County is that it is home to the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1934. The refuge houses the largest natural lake in North Carolina, Lake Mattamuskeet, which covers more than 40,000 acres. This unique ecosystem attracts diverse migratory bird species, which makes it a popular birdwatching destination. The lake is also surrounded by wetlands, marshes, and forests, providing the perfect habitat for a wide range of wildlife, such as the red wolf and American black bear.
