McDowell County, located in the great state of North Carolina, was established in 1842, named in honor of Colonel Joseph McDowell, a Revolutionary War leader, and a prominent figure in the state's early history. Covering an area of approximately 447 square miles, it is situated on the western side of the state within the Blue Ridge Mountains. The county seat is Marion, named after General Francis Marion, a celebrated Revolutionary War hero, commonly known as the "Swamp Fox."
