Onslow County is located in the southeast region of the great state of North Carolina. It was established on October 6, 1734, and is named in honor of Sir Arthur Onslow, who was an influential member of the British Parliament during the period of 1728-1761. The county seat is Jacksonville, which was incorporated in 1842 and later named after President Andrew Jackson.

The history of Onslow County can be traced back to a Native American tribe known as the Tuscarora, who inhabited the area long before European settlers arrived. In the early 1700s, English and Welsh immigrants settled in the region, primarily focusing on farming and cultivating land for tobacco, rice, and indigo. The county also played a role during the American Revolutionary War when several skirmishes and battles took place in the region. The Civil War, similarly, left an impact on Onslow County with the Battle of Cedar Point and the capture of the town of Swansboro.

Throughout the 20th century, Onslow County underwent significant growth and development. The establishment of Camp Lejeune, a United States Marine Corps installation built in 1941, brought an influx of military personnel and their families, significantly contributing to the local economy and diversifying its population.

A fun fact about Onslow County is that it boasts several beautiful beaches, making it a popular destination for tourists. Among them is North Topsail Beach, which has been recognized as one of the "Best Restored Beaches" in the United States for its successful beach preservation and management.
