Pamlico County, located in the great state of North Carolina, was established on January 1, 1872. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, along the Pamlico River and neighbored by the Pamlico Sound. The county was named after the Native American Pamlico Tribe and the adjacent river that was also called Pamlico by the early European settlers.

The county has its roots in the Bath County, which was created in 1696 as a precinct of the Archdale Precinct. Bath later split into Beaufort County, and Craven County was later created from it in 1705. Pamlico County emerged from the Craven County over two and a half centuries later.

The Pamlico region played an essential role during the early settlement in North America, as it was home to the Native American tribes, and later the European settlers as well. The Albemarle Sound, which is connected to the Pamlico Sound, was an important water route for the settlers, leading to the establishment of colonial towns like Bath, established in 1705, which is North Carolina's oldest town.

A fun fact about Pamlico County is that it remains a primarily rural area, with a rich maritime history and a strong connection to its boating and fishing heritage. The Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon along the East Coast of the United States and provides various recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and bird-watching, thus making the region a popular destination for water enthusiasts.
