Pasquotank County is located in northeastern North Carolina and was established in 1668 as part of the Albemarle County. It was later given its current name, derived from the Native American word "pasketanki," which means "where the current divides or forks," in 1681. The county seat is the city of Elizabeth City, which was founded in 1793 and named in honor of Elizabeth "Betsy" Tooley, a local landowner.

Pasquotank County's early economy was primarily based on agriculture, with the production of staple crops such as corn, wheat, and tobacco. The region was also known for its rich timber resources and industries like sawmills and shipbuilding. The Dismal Swamp Canal, connecting the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia to the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina, opened in 1805 and runs through Pasquotank County, a significant transportation and trade route for the region.

During the Civil War, Elizabeth City was captured by the Union forces in 1862 and served as an important supply point throughout the war. In the post-Civil War era, Pasquotank County saw the advancement of transportation and the establishment of educational institutions, including Elizabeth City State University, which was founded in 1891.

A fun fact about Pasquotank County is that the Dismal Swamp Canal, the oldest continuously operating man-made canal in the United States, received its name from explorer William Byrd II in 1728, who dubbed the area "vast Body of Dirt and nastiness." The canal was surveyed by George Washington and his company, and the swampy land inspired poet Edgar Allan Poe to write his poem, "The Lake."
