Sampson County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of North Carolina, was formed in 1784 from a part of Duplin County. Named after John Sampson, who was the first Register of Deeds of Duplin County, the region boasts a rich history dating back to its early colonial settlement days.

The early settlers in this region mainly comprised Scotch-Irish, English, and Welsh inhabitants. The county played an essential role during the Revolutionary War as the Battle of Rockfish Creek, which took place in 1781, was fought within its boundaries. The local militia successfully defended the area against British forces led by the notorious Colonel David Fanning.

Sampson County experienced significant agricultural development in the 19th century with the introduction of brightleaf tobacco and became a significant source of cotton production due to its fertile landscape.

During the Civil War, many local men enlisted to fight for the Confederacy. Unfortunately, the end of the war led to economic devastation as the region's infrastructure, like many other Southern regions, suffered immense damage. However, through resilience and dedication, Sampson County slowly started rebuilding itself after the war.

In more recent years, Sampson County has developed into an agricultural, industrial, and residential hub, offering a balance between modern advancements and traditional living.

Fun Fact: Sampson County is home to the Spivey's Corner Hollerin' Contest, an annual event established in 1969 to celebrate the nearly lost art of hollerin', a traditional form of long-distance communication used by early settlers in rural areas. The contest has even gained national attention, and some winners of the competition have also appeared on popular television shows to showcase their hollerin' prowess.
