Union County is located in the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina, and it has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1842. It was formed from sections of neighboring Anson and Mecklenburg Counties, and its creation was a response to the population increase and demand for better local government representation in the area.

Monroe, the county seat, was incorporated in 1843, and it was named after the 5th President of the United States, James Monroe. The city's strategic location at the intersection of major transportation routes helped it flourish as a trade and economic hub.

The county's early economy depended heavily on agriculture, with cotton being the primary cash crop. The invention of the cotton gin significantly contributed to the growth of cotton production in Union County throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.

During the Civil War, Union County played a limited role, as there were no major battles fought within its boundary. However, a significant number of men from the county enlisted and served in the Confederate forces.

Union County experienced rapid growth and urbanization in the late 20th century, transforming it from a largely rural area to a more suburban region. The growth of nearby Charlotte began to spill over into Union County, and it has continued to expand, attracting residents and businesses alike with its strong economy, quality of life, and proximity to major transportation routes.

Fun Fact: The Reed Gold Mine, located in the northern part of Union County, played a significant role in the history of gold mining in the United States. Gold was officially discovered there in 1799, making it the site of the first documented gold find in the nation. This discovery ultimately led to the North Carolina Gold Rush in the early 1800s.
