Wilson County, North Carolina
.Wilson County is located in the eastern part of the state of North Carolina and was established on February 13, 1855. The county was carved out from portions of Edgecombe, Johnston, Nash, and Wayne counties. It was named in honor of Louis D. Wilson, a state legislator and U.S. Congressman who served in the Mexican-American War and died of fever during the campaign.
The county seat and largest city in the region is Wilson, which was incorporated in 1849. Initially, the county's economy was primarily based on agriculture, with the cultivation of crops such as tobacco, cotton, and corn. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the arrival of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and other major rail lines contributed significantly to the growth and development of the area, helping to establish Wilson as a major transportation hub and tobacco market in the state.
Throughout its history, Wilson County has been a center for culture, education, and trade. Barton College, a private liberal arts institution, was founded in the city of Wilson in 1902 and remains an essential educational institution in the region.
