Adams County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of North Dakota. It was established on April 17, 1907, and named after John Quincy Adams, a railroad official and local resident. The county is surrounded by Hettinger, Grant, and Bowman counties and covers an area of about 989 square miles. The city of Hettinger serves as the county seat.

The region was first inhabited by Native Americans, particularly the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes, who lived along the rivers and streams in the area. European settlement in the area began in the late 19th century with farmers and ranchers drawn to the fertile lands, which were suitable for agriculture and raising livestock. The expansion of the railroad system in the early 20th century further boosted the development of Adams County.

Agriculture continues to be a major economic driver in Adams County today, with significant contributions from crops like wheat, barley, and sunflowers, as well as cattle and sheep ranching. Additionally, outdoor recreational opportunities abound in the region due to the natural beauty and scenic landscapes found throughout the area.

Fun fact: Adams County is home to the North Dakota Rodeo Association (NDRA) Championship Rodeo, an annual event held in Hettinger that attracts contestants and visitors from all over the region. The event showcases a range of exciting rodeo performances, promoting the local community and its western heritage.
