Barnes County, located in the southeastern part of North Dakota, was established in 1873 and officially organized on January 6, 1879. The county, named in honor of Judge Alanson H. Barnes, a distinguished jurist and notable pioneer in the state, covers an area of approximately 1,492 square miles.

Its county seat, Valley City, is known as the City of Bridges because of its numerous bridges over the Sheyenne River. The Sheyenne River, a critical water source, winds its way through the county, providing an essential lifeline for both agriculture and wildlife.

Early settlers in Barnes County were predominantly of Norwegian, German, and Irish descent. They were attracted by the rich, fertile land suitable for farming and the availability of free land through the Homestead Act of 1862. Agriculture remains the primary economic driver in Barnes County with an emphasis on wheat, corn, and soybean production, as well as cattle farming.
