Benson County is located in the northeastern part of the state of North Dakota. Established on March 9, 1883, the county is named after Bertil W. Benson, a member of the Dakota Territory Legislature from 1883 to 1885. The county seat of Benson County is Minnewaukan, which means "the spirit water" or "the haunted water" in the Dakota language.

Prior to European settlement, Benson County was inhabited by various Native American tribes, primarily the Dakota (Sioux) and Assiniboine. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region saw an influx of homesteaders, attracted by the promise of fertile farmland and economic opportunities in agriculture. Due to its location and availability of land, many settlers of Norwegian and German descent migrated to this county to establish their farms.

Today, Benson County boasts a strong agricultural economy, particularly in the production of crops such as wheat, barley, and soybeans. The county is also home to the Fort Totten State Historic Site, which was established in 1867 as a military post during the Indian Wars and later transformed into an Indian boarding school in the late 19th century. This site now serves as a museum, providing visitors with a glimpse into the region's past.

A fun fact about Benson County is that it is home to the North Dakota portion of the Spirit Lake Reservation, inhabited by the federally recognized Spirit Lake Tribe, consisting of Dakota people. The reservation offers various opportunities for visitors like fishing, camping, and bird watching, and it plays a significant role in preserving the culture and history of the Dakota people in this region.
