Bottineau County is located in the northern part of North Dakota, USA. Established on January 4, 1873, the county is named in honor of Pierre Bottineau (1814-1895), a French-Canadian frontiersman who was a prominent hunter, trapper, and land guide in the region.

The area of Bottineau County was initially inhabited by Native American tribes like the Assiniboine, Ojibwa, and Sioux. European settlement in the area began in the early 1800s. The land was mainly used for agriculture, with gradually increasing demand for the establishment of farms and settlements. By the 1890s, the Soo Line Railroad had connected the county to larger transportation networks, further stimulating its growth.

The city of Bottineau serves as the county seat, and the county comprises a total area of 1,697 square miles. A significant portion of Bottineau County is covered by the beautiful Turtle Mountains, a chain of hills rich in flora and fauna.

A fun fact about this region is that Bottineau County is home to the International Peace Garden, a 2,339-acre botanical garden dedicated to promoting peace and friendships between the United States and Canada. Established in 1932, the garden is located on the international border between the two countries and features beautiful flowers, monuments, and recreational facilities for visitors to enjoy.
