Burke County is situated in the northwestern region of the great state of North Dakota, United States. It was established on July 12, 1910, and formally organized on August 25, 1910. The county was named in honor of John Burke, who served as a North Dakota State Judge and Governor, and later became the Treasurer of the United States.

Prior to the county's establishment, the land was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara for thousands of years. The area underwent a significant transformation in the late 1800s with the westward expansion of European settlers. The construction of railroads in this region supported agricultural development and led to a rapid influx of settlers.

Burke County covers an area of approximately 1,104 square miles (2,860 square kilometers). The county seat is Bowbells, and other towns and cities include Flaxton, Powers Lake, Columbus, and Portal. The economy of Burke County has mainly relied on agriculture and the rich soil of the region, producing crops like wheat, flax, and barley, as well as supporting cattle ranching.
