Cavalier County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of North Dakota. It was created by an 1879 territorial legislature act, but the organization was not completed until August 8, 1884, when it was named in honor of Charles Cavileer, a prominent Red River Valley pioneer and customs agent. The county seat is Langdon, established in 1886.

Historically, the area was part of the large Dakota Territory before North Dakota became a state in 1889. Settlers in Cavalier County, the majority of whom were of Norwegian, German, and Irish descent, primarily focused on agricultural activities due to the fertile soil and abundant farming opportunities.

One fun fact about Cavalier County is that it is home to the Frost Fire Ski & Snowboard Area, a unique location situated in the Pembina River Gorge. This outdoor recreational spot offers numerous winter sports and activities, such as skiing and snowboarding, as well as hiking and mountain biking trails during the summer months. The scenic Pembina Gorge is also a prime destination for nature enthusiasts, providing opportunities for bird watching and exploring the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
