Divide County is located in the northwest corner of the great state of North Dakota. It was established on December 9, 1910, when it was separated from Williams County. The county's name was derived from the fact that it serves as the divide between the watersheds of the Upper Missouri and Upper Mississippi River Basins, which are separated by the continental divide. The county seat is located in Crosby.

The region was initially settled primarily by Norwegian and other Scandinavian immigrants, who were attracted to the area's productive agriculture and potential for raising livestock. The early economy of Divide County was largely based on agriculture, with wheat and other grain crops being the primary focus. As the county developed, oil and natural gas reserves were discovered, leading to a diversification of the local economy.

Fun Fact: Divide County is home to the Fortuna Air Force Station, which was an integral part of the United States' air defense system from 1952 to 1984. It housed both a radar station and a ground control intercept station, enabling the Air Force to monitor and defend against potential enemy aircraft.
