Dunn County, located in the western part of North Dakota, was established on February 10th, 1908, and was named in honor of John Piatt Dunn, a local politician and lawyer. The county's population grew significantly with the influx of settlers due to the promotion of the area by the Northern Pacific Railroad. Killdeer, the county seat, originally founded in 1914, serves as the center of the region's commerce, agricultural industry, and other businesses.

Dunn County experienced an oil boom in the early 1950s with the discovery of oil in the region. This development boosted the area's economy and attracted people from all around the country, bringing considerable growth to its cities and towns.

One fun fact about Dunn County is that it is home to the Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site. This site commemorates a significant battle that occurred on July 28th, 1864, during the American Civil War between the US Army and the Sioux Indians led by Chiefs Inkpaduta, Gall, and Sitting Bull. Visitors to the historic site can view plaques that provide information about the battle and also take in the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding North Dakota badlands.
