Foster County is located in the state of North Dakota and was created on January 4, 1873, by the territorial legislature. However, it wasn't organized until February 23, 1883, when the first meetings of the county commissioners took place. The county is named in honor of George I. Foster, a prominent North Dakota pioneer, and legislator. Covering an area of 647 square miles, the county seat of Foster County is Carrington, a vibrant hub for agricultural and commercial activities.

The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Dakota (also known as the Sioux), prior to the arrival of European settlers in the late 19th century. The construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which began in 1872, played a significant role in the settlement and development of the region in the early years. Agriculture has remained a dominant industry in Foster County, with farming and livestock production being major contributors to the local economy.

One fun fact about Foster County is the Pipestem Dam, which is located near Carrington. It was built in the late 1960s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide flood control, recreation opportunities, and water supply for the area. The reservoir created by the dam, known as the Pipestem Lake, covers 2,000 acres and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities.
