Grant County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of North Dakota. The county was created in 1916, named in honor of President Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. It was originally part of Morton County but was separated due to the increasing population at that time, and the need for better governance and distribution of resources. The county seat is in Carson, which became the seat upon its establishment in 1917, replacing Leith.

Primarily rural, this county covers an area of about 1,659 square miles and has a significant agricultural history, with farming and ranching being its main economic base. Its rich farmlands produce crops such as wheat, barley, corn, oats, and sunflowers, while cattle ranching is also prevalent.

A fun fact about Grant County is that it features the Petrified Forest, a North Dakota state park, which contains petrified wood and fossils dating back over 55 million years to the Paleocene Epoch. The Petrified Forest offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore its fascinating geological history and indulge in outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, bird watching, and photography.
