Hettinger County is located in the southwestern part of North Dakota, USA. It was founded on May 9, 1883, by the North Dakota Territorial Legislature but was abolished soon after, as it didn't meet the required population to exist as an independent county. However, North Dakota officials recreated Hettinger County in 1907 to foster growth and development, and it was officially organized on July 1, 1909. The county was named in honor of Mathias Hettinger, who was a territorial judge involved in the construction of the first telegraph line in the Dakota Territory.

A significant component of Hettinger County's economy has been agriculture, primarily focusing on wheat, barley, oats, flax seed, and various livestock like cattle and sheep. The region has also experienced some oil and gas production.

One fun fact about Hettinger County is that it is home to a unique geological wonder called the Cannonball Concretions. These concretions, located near the town of Mott, are spherical rocks formed by mineral deposition over time, resulting in cannonball-like formations ranging from the size of a golf ball to over 10 feet in diameter. This fascinating geological attraction draws visitors wanting to explore and view these intriguing natural formations.
