Named after Judson LaMoure, a prominent fur trader, postmaster, and territorial legislator, the county's land area covers approximately 1,176 square miles. It hosts the city of LaMoure, which serves as its county seat.

The county's population, currently around 4,000, was initially shaped by Euro-American settlers, particularly Germans and Scandinavians, who were attracted by the fertile land suitable for agriculture.
