.McKenzie County is located in the western part of North Dakota and is named after Alexander McKenzie, a political leader in the early days of North Dakota's history. The county was first created on March 9, 1883, as part of the larger Dakota Territory, but was later eliminated in 1891. The county was then reorganized on April 20, 1905, with its current boundaries established.
McKenzie County's early history was marked by the influx of European and Scandinavian immigrants who settled in the region to pursue agricultural opportunities. The Native American tribes, such as the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara, however, had called the area home for centuries. With the completion of the railroad in the early 1900s, the population in McKenzie County saw significant growth.
With the discovery of oil in North Dakota in the latter half of the 20th century, McKenzie County experienced an economic boom that continues to this day. The Bakken Shale, a prominent oil-producing formation, has brought significant job growth and opportunities to the area, especially in Watford City, the county seat.
