McLean County, located in the great state of North Dakota, was founded on March 8, 1883. Named in honor of John A. McLean, a prominent local judge and the first mayor of Bismarck, the county's original boundaries were altered in 1885 and 1887. With a current land area spanning approximately 2,100 square miles, it's the second-largest county in the state. Washburn, established in 1882, serves as the county seat.

One interesting aspect of the region's history is its mix of European settlements. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area became host to various immigrant communities, including Germans, Norwegians, and Swedes. The rich agricultural land attracted these settlers, and farming became the primary economic base for McLean County.

A fun fact about McLean County is that it's home to Garrison Dam, the fifth-largest earthen dam in the world. Completed in 1953, the dam created Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota's largest reservoir. Covering over 368,000 acres, Lake Sakakawea is popular for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities, which contribute to the county's tourism industry.
