Mercer County is situated in the western region of the great state of North Dakota, and its history can be traced back to the settlement of European immigrants in the late 19th century. The county was officially established on August 4, 1873, but this initial attempt was deemed non-existent due to legal technicalities, and it was later re-established on March 9, 1881. The county was named in honor of William Henry Harrison Mercer (1844-1901), a prominent rancher and early settler in the area.

The region was first settled primarily by German-Russian and Norwegian immigrants in the 1880s and 1890s. They were drawn to the fertile land and the potential for a successful agricultural way of life. The county's economy was traditionally founded on agriculture, livestock raising, and mining. In fact, the first commercial lignite coal mine in the state was located in the area in 1873. Later, the energy industry expanded with the discovery of oil in the state, and Mercer County became home to the Coyote Creek Mining Company, an important facility for lignite coal production.

One fun fact about Mercer County is that it is home to the "Sandy Beach Recreation Area," which is located on the shore of Lake Sakakawea. The lake was created with the construction of Garrison Dam on the Missouri River, and it is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the United States. The Sandy Beach Recreation Area is a popular destination for residents and tourists alike, offering activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and camping.

Today, Mercer County continues to be a thriving region in North Dakota, with its natural resources and rich cultural history attracting visitors from far and wide.
