Morton County, located in the great state of North Dakota, was established on March 8, 1873, and organized later on August 17, 1878. The county was formed from parts of the previously established Burleigh and Stevenson counties. It was named in honor of Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton, an influential Indiana governor and U.S. senator who actively supported the Union during the American Civil War.

The region has a rich history closely connected to the Northern Pacific Railway, which greatly contributed to the settlement, growth, and development of the area. In 1873, the railroad reached the Missouri River, and in 1883, the first bridge connecting present-day Bismarck and Mandan was completed. This connection facilitated transportation and economic development, attracting people to settle in Morton County.

A fun fact about Morton County is that it houses one of North Dakota's most visited state parks, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, located in the southern part of the county. Established in 1907, the park features a reconstructed 19th-century military fort, the home of General George Custer, and a Mandan Indian village site. The park offers insight into the region's history and provides recreational activities like hiking, camping, and horseback riding, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
