Mountrail County is located in the northwestern region of North Dakota, covering an area of approximately 1,942 square miles. The county was first established in 1873 but was later absorbed into Ward County in 1892, due to its decline in population. The historical background of Mountrail County is linked to Native American tribes, predominantly the Mandan and Hidatsa, who have lived in the area for hundreds of years. European settlers began to move into the region during the late 19th century, primarily for agricultural purposes. The construction of the Great Northern Railway in the early 20th century helped to spur further development in the region.

Mountrail County experienced an oil boom in the early 21st century, thanks to advancements in drilling technology that enabled previously inaccessible resources to be extracted. The so-called Bakken Boom attracted thousands of workers, significantly increasing the county's population and transforming its economy. The region is now a key player in the energy industry in North Dakota.
