Nelson County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of North Dakota, USA. The county, named in honor of Knute Nelson (1843-1923), a Norwegian-American politician who served as the Governor of Minnesota and a US Senator, was established by the North Dakota Territorial Legislature on March 2, 1883. However, the county government was organized on June 9, 1884. Lakota is the proud county seat.

The region's topography mainly consists of wide plains, providing a perfect environment for agricultural activities. The economy in its early days was driven by agriculture, primarily focusing on the cultivation of crops like wheat, canola, barley, and sunflowers. The fertile lands in the area played a significant role in shaping the growth and development of Nelson County.

One fun fact about Nelson County is that it is home to the Icelandic State Park, a regional cultural and recreational hub with more than 200 acres of picturesque landscapes. The park was established in 1964 to honor the Icelandic heritage of the local settlers from the 1880s who contributed significantly to the community's development. Today, the park features a range of recreational activities, such as hiking, bird watching, and fishing, along with historical sites like Gunlogson Homestead and the Pioneer Heritage Center.
