Oliver County is located in the central region of the great state of North Dakota. Established on May 22, 1885, by the Dakota Territorial Legislature, it was named in honor of Harry S. Oliver, a surveyor, and civil engineer who played a significant role in the local railroad industry. The county was organized on November 18, 1887, after the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway was completed. The city of Center serves as the county seat.

The county encompasses an area of approximately 731 square miles, mainly consisting of agricultural land. Historically, Native American tribes, such as the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara, first occupied the region before the arrival of European settlers in the 1800s. The Lewis and Clark Expedition also passed near the county in 1804, during their exploration of the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory.

A fun fact about Oliver County is that it is home to the Custer Trail, one of the routes used by General George Armstrong Custer and his troops during their expedition to Little Bighorn in 1876. The trail can still be traced today, providing a unique historical glimpse into 19th-century military expeditions in the region.
