Pierce County is located in the great state of North Dakota and was founded on March 11, 1887. The county was named in honor of Gilbert Ashville Pierce, who served as a U.S. Senator for Dakota Territory and as the ninth Governor of the territory.

The region initially served as an important hub for agricultural and livestock production during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the railroad expanded into the Great Plains, small towns sprouted up along the tracks, leading to a steady growth in population and trade. Rugby, the county seat, was established in 1886, and it played a pivotal role in the growth of the county being a prominent railroad junction.

In terms of geography, Pierce County covers an area of about 1,082 square miles and consists of mainly flat to rolling terrain. The primary rivers that flow through the county are the Sheyenne and the Souris (Mouse) Rivers, both of which provide a vital source of water and recreation for the community.

One fun fact about Pierce County is that it is home to the "Geographical Center of North America." A large stone monument was erected in 1931 in the town of Rugby to mark the geographical center, making it a popular tourist attraction in the county. Visitors from all over the world come to see the monument and take their pictures with it as a unique memory of their trip to North Dakota.
