Ransom County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of North Dakota. Established on January 4, 1873, it was named in honor of Major General Thomas E. G. Ransom, a Civil War hero who served as an engineer officer on the staff of General Ulysses S. Grant. The county was officially organized on March 25, 1881, with settlements predominantly established by immigrants from Norway, Sweden, Germany, and other parts of Europe.

The county seat is Lisbon, which had been founded in the summer of 1880 as a pioneer settlement. Ransom County has a strong agricultural heritage, with fertile soil ideal for growing crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans. Ranching and dairy farming have also played a significant role in the region's economy. The Sheyenne River flows through the county, providing water resources and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

A fun fact about Ransom County is that it is home to the Fort Ransom State Park, which encompasses over 900 acres of picturesque land along the Sheyenne River. The park is named after the historic military installation known as Fort Ransom, which was operational from 1867 to 1872. The fort was established to protect transportation routes and settlers from potential conflicts with the local Native American tribes during the period of westward expansion. Today, visitors can enjoy various recreational activities, including hiking, horseback riding, and camping, as well as learn about the region's rich history through interpretive programs and events at the park.
