Richland County is located in the southeastern corner of the great state of North Dakota. Established in 1873, the county is named after Morgan T. Rich, a prominent early settler and successful businessman. The county seat, Wahpeton, has served as the local government hub since Richland County's inception.

Richland County was one of the first areas to be settled in North Dakota. The county has witnessed significant growth and development over the years as it played a crucial role in the westward expansion of the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With fertile land and an abundance of natural resources, agriculture has always been the mainstay of the region's economy.

Home to several Native American tribes, the area was also known as the "Buffalo Path" because of the massive herds of bison that once roamed here. European-American settlers arrived in the late 1800s, and Richland County quickly became a hub of activity, thanks to the Northern Pacific Railway, which connected the region to other parts of the country.

Fun fact: Richland County is considered the birthplace of one of North Dakota's unique culinary creations, known as "Knoephla Soup," a doughy German dumpling soup. Knoephla soup continues to be a popular dish across the state and is often considered a comfort food for many North Dakotans.
