The county was named in honor of Joseph Rolette, a prominent fur trader and politician in the area. The county's economy has been historically based on agriculture, specifically wheat and cattle production. The county seat of Rolette County is Rolla, a small town of just over 1,200 residents. In the early days of the county, the Soo Line Railroad played a significant part in its growth and transportation.
