Sioux County is located in the southern part of North Dakota, USA. Established on March 9, 1914, the county is named after the Dakota Sioux, one of the Native American tribes prevalent in the region. The county has a land area of approximately 1,128 square miles, with the town of Fort Yates serving as the county seat.

The region has a rich history, rooted in Native American culture. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the Great Plains were inhabited by the Dakota or Sioux, from which the county derives its name. In the 1700s and 1800s, French and American fur traders and explorers began venturing into the region, leading to a series of treaties and land disputes that ultimately resulted in the displacement of the local tribes.

One major historical event connected to Sioux County and Fort Yates is the death of Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull, which occurred nearby in 1890. Sitting Bull was killed due to the conflict between the US government and various tribes over land and rights, including the controversial Wounded Knee Massacre that happened shortly after.

A fun fact about Sioux County is that it is home to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, whose reservation encompasses the entirety of the county. Standing Rock is notable for its ongoing efforts to preserve indigenous culture and promote environmental awareness, as evidenced by the 2016 Dakota Access Pipeline protests, which brought international attention to the region.
