Towner County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of North Dakota. Established by the Dakota Territory Legislature on March 8, 1883, it was named in honor of Oscar M. Towner, who was a businessman, member of the territorial House of Representatives, and a railroad promoter. The county government was first organized on April 24, 1884, with Cando as the county seat.

The region was primarily settled by European immigrants, who found the lush and fertile land suitable for agriculture. Towner County played a significant role in the state's farm production, with farming becoming the main source of income for many locals. As part of the pioneer tradition, a sense of community was important - this led to strong social bonds amongst settlers.

Towner County, like other parts of North Dakota, has a rich cultural heritage, with numerous historic sites and buildings. It is home to several churches built by early settlers, with various architectural styles, reflecting different religious denominations.

One fun fact about Towner County is that it is home to Limestone Butte, the highest point in the county, which stands at an elevation of 2,211 feet. This prominent landmark, located within the Turtle Mountains, offers scenic views of the surrounding prairie landscape and serves as an area of interest for nature enthusiasts and hikers.
