Williams County is situated in the northwestern part of the great state of North Dakota, and it was formed in 1891. The county was named after Erastus Appleman Williams, a lawyer, and politician who served in the North Dakota House of Representatives in the late 19th century.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, specifically the Mandan and later the Hidatsa. In the late 1800s, the area saw an influx of European settlers as the Northern Pacific Railway made its way westward, connecting the area with the rest of the United States.

Williams County played a part in the early 20th-century homesteading movement, during which settlers moved into the area to make their livelihood through farming, small business, and other forms of enterprise. The county's growth slowed down in the mid-20th century; however, it experienced a resurgence with the Bakken oil boom in the early 21st century. This led to a significant increase in population and economic activity.

One fun fact about Williams County is that it is home to the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. Built in 1828, it was the most important fur trading post on the Upper Missouri River until it was closed in 1867, and its reconstructed facilities now provide insight into trading operations that occurred during this time period. The site attracts history enthusiasts as well as tourists from around the world for its rich history and authentic reconstruction of the bustling trade days.
