Buffalo County in the great state of Nebraska has a rich history that adds to the tapestry of the American Midwest. Situated in the central part of the state, Buffalo County spans 975 square miles and was officially established in 1855. The county was named after the large buffalo herds that once roamed across the Great Plains region and were critical to the lives of Native American tribes inhabiting the area.

Welcome waves of European settlers, starting mainly in the 1860s, began to transform the region. The construction of the Union Pacific Railroad through the county in 1866 led to the founding of the city of Kearney, which notably became the county seat in 1874.

Buffalo County experienced modest growth throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the economy dependent on agriculture and farming, a trend continuing to this day. Additionally, the founding of the University of Nebraska-Kearney campus in 1905 has been instrumental in contributing to the region's educational and cultural growth.

A fun fact about Buffalo County is that it is home to the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument - a unique museum that stretches across Interstate 80, chronicling the history of the region back to the Oregon, Mormon, and California trails, including the Gold Rush and the development of America's westward expansion. The archway is a symbol of the county's important role in transportation, migration, and the growth of the United States.
