Burt County is located in the northeastern part of Nebraska and was officially established on March 26, 1855. It was named in honor of Francis Burt, the first territorial governor of Nebraska. The county seat, Tekamah, was founded along the Missouri River in the same year. The region was initially inhabited by the Omaha and Otoe tribes, who were later pushed out by European-American settlers.

With fertile soil and favorable weather conditions, the area quickly became a hub for agriculture, and the local economy primarily revolved around farming and agricultural-related activities. Early settlers were primarily of Swedish, Danish, and German descent. The completion of the Sioux City and Pacific railroads helped connect Burt County to other parts of Nebraska and facilitated trade and economic growth.

As of the 2020 United States Census, Burt County had a population of approximately 6,306 residents.

A fun fact about Burt County is that it is home to the "World's Largest Porch Swing," located in the city of Tekamah. This quirky landmark is a fun spot for locals and tourists to visit, symbolizing the community spirit and welcoming atmosphere of the region.
