Custer County, located in the great state of Nebraska, was officially established on April 17, 1877. The county was named in honor of General George Armstrong Custer, a notable United States Army officer during the Civil War and the Indian Wars. The county, spanning over 2,576 square miles, is situated in the central region of the state and is bordered by various other counties, including Blaine, Loup, Valley, Sherman, Buffalo, Dawson, and Lincoln.

Broken Bow, the largest city in Custer County, was founded in 1882 when the railroad was extended to the area. It was named after Broken Bow, Nebraska, which originated from the Native American legend of a broken bow found near the townsite.

The early settlers were primarily engaged in agriculture, particularly cattle ranches and farms that produced crops like wheat, corn, oats, and hay. The area's population and economy grew steadily with the expansion and development of railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One fun fact about Custer County is its claim to fame as the origin of the "Texas Trail," a historic cattle trail that started at San Antonio, Texas, and passed through Custer County on its way to Ogallala, Nebraska. The trail was used in the late 19th century for transporting cattle to Northern markets and played a significant role in the cattle industry of the time. Additionally, Custer County is home to the picturesque Victoria Springs State Recreation Area, which is the third oldest park in Nebraska and offers visitors a chance to enjoy its natural spring water and serene surroundings.
