Dawes County, located in the northwestern part of Nebraska, was established on February 19, 1885. The county was named in honor of James W. Dawes, the sixth governor of Nebraska, who played a vital role in its formation. The county's administrative center and largest city is Chadron, which was named after the nearby Chadron Creek.

The region shares its rich history with the native tribes, particularly the Sioux and Cheyenne, who occupied the land before the arrival of European settlers. The clashes between the indigenous tribes and the United States military are also a significant part of the area's history, with the Wounded Knee Massacre occurring nearby in South Dakota in 1890.

The arrival of the Fremont, Elkhorn, and Missouri Valley (FE&MV) Railroad in 1885 played a transformative role in the county's growth and development. This contributed to the expansion of the agricultural sector and increased trade opportunities.

Dawes County is home to the Museum of the Fur Trade, which showcases the region's history and impact through the fur trade. Moreover, the county is also known for its beautiful landscapes and natural attractions, most notably Chadron State Park, Nebraska's oldest state park, established in 1921.

Fun fact: Dawes County is home to the historic Fort Robinson, a former military base used during the Indian Wars, World War I and World War II. It has been transformed into a state park the Fort Robinson State Park which offers various recreational opportunities for visitors, including hiking, horseback riding, and camping.
