Dawson County is located in the central region of the great state of Nebraska. It was established on January 11, 1860, and its county seat is Lexington. The county was named after Jacob Dawson, who was the first postmaster of Lancaster, Nebraska.

The history of Dawson County is intertwined with the growth of the railroad industry in the United States. The Union Pacific Railroad played a significant role in the development of this county, as it was primarily built on land appropriated from the railroad. Settlers were drawn to Dawson County due to the presence of the railroad, fertile farmland, and the opportunities presented by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted land to settlers willing to develop and improve upon it.

Agriculture has been central to Dawson County's economy since its early days. Initially, farming activities focused on corn, but over the years, the agricultural industry diversified to include livestock and other crops, such as alfalfa, sugar beets, and potatoes.
