Franklin County is located in the south-central part of Nebraska, a state in the Great Plains region of the United States. It was officially created by an act of the Nebraska Legislature on March 23, 1871, and named after the renowned scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin. The region that is now occupied by Franklin County was once inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Pawnee, Otoe, and Sioux.

Settlement in Franklin County started in the 1860s when homesteaders began arriving to take advantage of the newly passed Homestead Act, which provided opportunities for landownership. The first permanent settlers arrived in the late 1860s, with the town of Franklin being established in 1870. Franklin County was then organized in 1871, and Franklin was named the county seat.

The county witnessed steady growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly due to the surge in agriculture and the construction of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, which connected its towns to markets in the east. Over time, several other towns sprouted across the county, including Campbell, Hildreth, Riverton, Bloomington, and Upland.

One fun fact about Franklin County is that it is home to the Franklin County Museum, located in the town of Franklin. The museum, founded in 1973, offers a look into the area's history, showcasing exhibits featuring Native American artifacts, antique farm equipment, vintage clothing, and other items representing the county's rich past. As of 2021, Franklin County covers an area of 576 square miles and has a population of around 3,000 residents, reflective of its agricultural and rural roots.
