Greeley County, located in the great state of Nebraska, was established on March 1, 1871, and named in honor of Horace Greeley, a famous American editor and publisher at the time. Greeley was an advocate for the settlement of Nebraska, popularizing the phrase "Go West, young man, and grow up with the country." The county is situated in the central region of Nebraska and covers an area of 571 square miles.

The settlement of Greeley County initially began in the late 1860s and 1870s, spurred by the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad's line extension. Greeley Center, the county seat, was founded in 1887 by the Irish Land League, who imported direct Irish colonization. As with many other counties in Nebraska, agriculture remains a vital part of the local community and economy.

A fun fact about Greeley County is that it hosts the Greeley Old-Time Tractor and Threshing Bee. This annual event, held in Greeley Center, features antique tractors, machinery, and working demonstrations, providing a unique opportunity for attendees to experience the region's agricultural history up-close.
